Manufacturing

Marand’s manufacturing plant located in Moorabbin Victoria has a complete range of manufacturing capabilities including fabrication, 5 axis machining, complex assembly, electrical wiring, hydraulic and pneumatic assembly, painting and commissioning.

Goods Receiving

Marand has 2 receiving stores, one for raw material and the other for commercial items. The majority of the material used must be certified and through our quality system, the stores print out labels and mark each individual piece of material as well as entering all receipts on our MRP system.

Fabrication

Marand’s skilled welders are tested and accredited to various industry and customer specific accreditations for the welding of mild steel, aluminium, invar and armour plating in both MIG and TIG welding. All critical welds are certified by a third party and reported in our quality system. Small sheet metal and light fabrication work is also performed in-house.

Machining

Our range of milling machines is extensive. Our latest acquisition is a 5 Axis Breton Flymill with a capacity of 6 metres x 3.5 metres and a height of 2 metres under the bridge. This machine compliments our other 5 Axis machines as well as the five large 3 Axis machines in our main bay. These machines are serviced by cranes with a total lifting capacity of 30 ton.

Our small machining section has both manual and 3 Axis machines capable of producing small intricate parts to fine tolerances.

Our turning section comprises of two Mazak Mazatrol lathes with a maximum swing of 350mm. The manual lathe has a swing of 650mm and 1500mm between centres.

Mechanical Assembly

Marand has three separate assembly areas. Assembly of jigs, fixtures and aerospace tooling is carried out in our tool room, Building and reconditioning of large machine tools such as our Under Floor Wheel Lathe and Hydraulic Presses is performed in our main bay with 30 Ton capacity overhead crane or the separate assembly plant under a 10 ton crane. In total Marand have approximately 5000 square metres of assembly area.

We support our equipment and machine tool building with regular on site service and support globally.

Electrical Assembly

Marand’s qualified A grade electricians manufacture, install and commission all the equipment manufactured to the customers specifications. From the build of the electrical cabinet to the final installation of the cameras provided for operator awareness the electrical team ensures a trouble free and safe machine.

Painting Facility

Our paint bay is a heated facility to pass the stringent requirements of our various customers. Inspection such as paint thickness on 2 pack paint is carried out and recorded to ensure our products withstand the various conditions they will be subjected to.

  • BAE Systems and Marand announce teaming agreement on Land 400

    2 February 2017

BAE Systems Australia and leading Australian defence SME Marand today announced a teaming agreement for LAND 400, building on the companies’ long-term partnership on major projects.

Marand will contribute leading cross-sector expertise gained from the automotive, aerospace, rail and defence sectors to the program, providing a range of production engineering solutions. The company has proven experience in welding ballistic steel, advanced machining and complex assembly performed on a daily basis for defence exports, and has been designing, building and launching vehicular production lines for over 30 years.

BAE Systems Australia Chief Executive, Glynn Phillips, said:

“I am delighted that Marand has chosen to work with BAE Systems Australia on Land 400. Today’s announcement demonstrates how Australian industry is getting behind our solution for the Australian Army.”

Marand Chief Executive Officer, Rohan Stocker, said:

“BAE Systems is a great partner. The Company delivers on its industrial commitments, transferring technology that has allowed Marand to create high skilled jobs and defence exports. We have already proven that we can deliver complex defence production technology transfers in Australia with 100 percent quality and delivery performance.”

BAE Systems worked with Marand on its transition from the automotive and aerospace to defence industry through collaboration on the global F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program more than 10 years ago. BAE Systems provides titanium parts to Marand which are used in the manufacture of F-35 vertical tail fins in Australia and are in turn exported to the USA under contract from BAE Systems in the UK.

  • Marand continues global F-35 success in training domain

Following on from their very successful work in manufacturing vertical tails, an extensive range of aerostructures tooling and the F-35 engine installation and removal trailer, Marand has recently competed for and won a contract from Lockheed Martin for the detail design and manufacture of new F-35 Lightning II training technology. Marand will design the fuselage assembly for an engine and lift fan removal and installation trainer (ELFRIT) for the F-35 program.

The initial ELFRIT will be delivered to the U.S. and will be used to train maintenance crews in the precision tasks of removing and installing engines and lift fans. Marand hopes that further examples of ELFRIT might be required at a number of the major F-35 sustainment bases worldwide.

The contract for the initial ELFRIT represents around 45 person-years of additional Australian input to the F-35 program. Marand envisages that over 95% of the labour input will be carried out by Australian companies and a large proportion of the material content will also be locally sourced.

Marand’s proven capability to develop and test innovative multi-purpose mechanical systems will be used for this contract.

Marand’s General Manager of Aerospace and Defence, Mr Steve Mellor said, “This is another great opportunity for the Marand team to provide more innovative solutions into the F-35 programme. We are very excited to have the opportunity.”

Marand expects to complete the design phase mid-2017 and to deliver the first unit late 2018.
